How to create effective leaflets and flyers

How to create effective leaflets and flyers that make the most of your marketing budget.

If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive way to raise the profile of your business, promote existing or maybe launch new services, printed leaflets can be a cost-effective way of reaching you potential clients.

At CP Creative, we are designers based in Cardiff providing design services across south Wales and we regularly design all kinds of printed material including leaflets, postcards, flyers posters and lots more. In this feature we thought we'd share some of our experience to help you make the most of your marketing budget.

Leaflets and postcards can be an effective way to promote your business and therefore provide a good Return On Investment (ROI). Here are a few tips that will ensure you make the best of your marketing budget.

Know your target customer

We've written about this in previous posts  and we cant stress it enough. If you have an idea of who you are targeting it will help with the design, copy-writing and distribution.

What should my leaflet look like?

We regularly recommend to our clients that they use less text and choose text that packs a punch. What we mean by this is if you use too many images, logos and write too much text you will either dilute your message or at worst totally confuse the recipient of your leaflet. It is better to create an eye-catching headline with a brief explanation coupled with a striking image or an image that will resonate with your target customers.

What size and type of paper should I use for my leaflets?

If you know how you are planning to distribute your leaflet this will have an impact on what size leaflet you choose. Letterboxes are fixed sizes and if you are distributing door to door we usually recommend using heavy paper stock so that the leaflet looks as good once its been posted as it did when originally printed. No one likes a crumpled leaflet hanging from their letterbox. By choosing a heavy piece of card and a small sized leaflet such as A6 or A5 you can avoid this.
